Special Education Program

 
The Bracken Ridge State School Special Education Program caters for students with disabilities from Prep to Year 6.  We believe that every child can learn, that all children should have access to a quality education, and that our role is to help develop their skills (academically, emotionally and physically) to prepare them for high school and life.
 
 
We have a purpose-built Special Education Unit situated in the middle of the school that includes a large teaching space.  However, our students spend the majority of each day in the regular classrooms, accessing the Australian Curriculum and specialist lessons, with the support of their class teacher, Special Education teachers and aides. Our highly qualified, warm, caring Special Education program  team, provide a calm, caring and safe environment for your child, and  look forward to working with you to make your children’s years at Bracken Ridge State School a time to look back on with pride.
 
We support students with:
 
·         Intellectual Impairment
 
·         Autistic Spectrum Disorder
 
·         Speech-Language Impairment
 
·         Physical Impairment
 
·         Hearing Impairment
 

Students also have access to:
 
·         Departmental  Advisory Visiting Teachers
 
·         Occupational Therapists
 
·         Physiotherapists
 
·         Speech-Language Pathologists and other specialists as required.
 


 
 Ways we Support our Students at Bracken Ridge State School:
 
·         Curriculum support in the areas of Literacy & Numeracy, including:
 
-               adjustments to class units,
 
-               provision of resources and modified assessment tasks
 
-               strategies for classroom use for our students.
 
·         Mindfulness, and emotional and social support,  either individually or in small group;
 
·         Fine and gross motor programs designed by our visiting Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist, for our students who require further assistance in these areas;
 
·         Technology options – iPads, access to computers with writing support programs, Wii
 
·         Regular communication and meetings with parents and stakeholders to discuss student progress and planning, with Individual Curriculum Plan meetings held at the beginning of each semester;
 
·         Gathering and using data to effectively implement and monitor the Individual Support Plan (ISP) or Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP);
 
·         Assisting class teachers to develop, implement and review the Education Adjustment Plan (EAP);
 
·         Managing teacher-aide support within the classroom;
 
·         SEP lunch-time retreat for students and a friend if they prefer a quieter environment to the playground. Otherwise,  students can also choose to join a number of lunchtime clubs, such as Hip Hop, Coding, Junior Dance and Street Art.
